The popular 3D gaming platform Roblox will finally be available on PlayStation consoles in October, Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki announced at the 2023 Roblox Developers Conference on Friday.
The news comes a whopping 17 years after Roblox was first released back in 2006. Currently, the free-to-play game is available for a wide range of platforms like Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, Mac, Meta Quest VR headsets, iOS, and Android.
As such, the lack of a PlayStation version has felt like a major omission to many players. Baszucki said during the reveal that PlayStation console support for Roblox has been something the company has been working on “in the background.”
Roblox had some 65.5 million daily active users (DAU) as of the quarter ending in June, the company says, who log an average of 2.3 hours per day apiece across its games. The platform surged in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, and remains immensely popular with kids and teens especially.
Following the announcement, members of the Roblox team proceeded to demonstrate how the game experience works on the PlayStation 5. It will offer cross-platform gameplay so that others can experience Roblox on mobile alongside console and VR headset players.
